  • Plot Summary: Siddharth Anand's BACHNA AE HASEENO weaves tidbits from Bollywood's more innocent past into a robust modern romance. The title song that plays over the opening credits reworks a 1977 hit from HUM KISISE KUM NAHIN, a film featuring 1970s icon Rishi Kapoor--the father of Ranbir Kapoor, BACHNA AE HASEENO's charismatic young star. From the first moments, the film borrows wisely and also manages to come up with something fresh. Producer Aditya Chopra contributed the story, which begins, like Chopra's massive hit DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE, with young Indians touring Switzerland. Ranbir Kapoor's Raj is a callow youth who wins the heart of Mahi (Minissha Lamba), a girl who has seen Chopra's film 17 times. The film follows Raj as he loves and leaves first Mahi and then struggling actress Radhika (Bipasha Basu), moves to Australia, and gets a taste of his own medicine from Gayatri, an independent young cabdriver (Deepika Padukone). Basu and Padukone are winning in strong roles. Raj frequently behaves badly, but the charming Kapoor is a definite star presence in his second film.

Anand (SALAAM NAMASTE) takes advantage of the young protagonist's globetrotting to place Kapoor in settings as gorgeous as his costars. The Alps, Venice, and Capri all look great as backdrops for song sequences, but none tops the spectacular Punjabi wedding sequence for luscious color and drama. The songs are as varied as the geography, shifting from MTV-style dance number to love duet to bhangra drumfest. (Music directors Vishal and Shekhar worked similar magic in OM SHANTI OM.) In best Bollywood fashion, the screenplay is by turns witty and heart-tugging, with knowing references to magic screen moments of past decades. But the film's up-to-date take on romance places it unmistakeably in the world of today.
